Geomembranes

PROBLEM

The introduction of geomembranes has impacts on designs in the areas of stress/deformation, slope stability, and they also change the flow regime. Relevant questions include: * How does the introduction of a geomembrane affect the stability of my design? * How much leakage potential is there if there is a rip or tear in the geomembrane?

SOLUTION

The SVSLOPE and the SVFLUX software packages are useful for problems related to geomembranes. Geomembranes may be entered as thin layers in SVSLOPE and the resulting impact on the slope stability may be quantified. SVFLUX is particularly well-suited for the evaluation of rips or tears in geomembranes in that the mesh refinement can reduce potential numerical problems with the calculation of leakage through a small tear.

Please note that most of these models can be downloaded through our SVOffice product suite.

Geomembrane01

A fine, almost impermeable geomembrane is placed between the landfill material and the regional soil. Significant mesh refinement is encountered to accommodate the large changes in permeability over a small spacial distance but the problem solves in reasonable time.

GeomembraneBC

A fine, almost impermeable geomembrane is specified as a boundary condition between the landfill material and the regional soil. When compared to the model Geomembrane01 which has a very thin region with low conductivity, the results of this model match, yet this model solves in a fraction of the time.

GeoMembraneSimpleBox

This model demonstates the application of a geomembrane boundary condition between 2 layers of different materials. The geomembrane restricts flow across the boundary.

Liner3DFailure

Initial conditions for modeling of a dam's liner. The liner has failed as a hole has developed. The study examines the threat of piping due to high gradients.

Attachments:

Liner3DFailure_GeomembraneCutoff

This model uses the Geomembrane boundary condition on a 3D sidewall to simulate a cutoff wall beneath the toe of the dam. When compares to the Liner3DFailure model, this model shows a significant alteration of the flow vectors at the toe.

Liner3DFailure_GeomembraneCutoffExtension

This model extends the Liner3DFailure_GeomembraneCutoffExtension model by added a geomembrane to to the second surface between the left edge of the model and the toe of the dam. This boundary condition meets the Geomembrane boundary condition on a 3D sidewall to simulate a cutoff wall beneath the toe of the dam. Flow is essentially shut off on the left side of the model above surface 2.
