The ability of water to flow through a soil is dependent on the size of the water-filled pores in a soil. As a soil undergoes compression, the pores decrease in size and the ability of the soil to transmit water is restricted. The representation of this process is necessary when modeling the consolidation of a soil. The ability of water to flow through a soil can be designated using a relationship between permeability and void ratio.
