Open Pit Modeling

Open pits are a common method of mining in the world. The design of such pits requires the application of technologies from a number of fields. One of the common scenarios is that the bottom of the pit may possibly extend beneath the water table of the surrounding geo-strata. If so, a suitable set of pumping wells must be designed in order to ensure that the bottom of the pit does not flood.

Other technical challenges may include:

  • Well placement / mesh design issues
  • Unsaturated flow modeling
  • Calculation of complex pinch-outs with geo-strata

Did You Know: Site Photos

When building models, it is sometimes useful to know how well 2D or plan-view geometry matches to the actual site. SVOffice™ 2009 now contains a feature, found under Model > Site Photo, that allows a user to display an image underneath their model at a specified pair of coordinates. By using GIS coordinates (or the appropriate ones relative to the bottom-left of your model), you can precisely align the image to your model's geometry!

Line and Geometry Simplification

One of the simplest ways to reduce model complexity is in the geometry. Region points that add no information to a model waste calculation time, increase the output file size, and make visualization of the results harder to understand. To address this, SVOffice™ 2009 now includes a line simplification tool that uses standard algorithms to locate and remove unnecessary detail from your geometry, without changing the overall shape.
