Geothermal applications have become more important in recent years with an increased focus on energy. The analysis often requires a complex interaction between boreholes or structures and the surrounding saturated or unsaturated soil system. The calculations may be highly nonlinear.

The SVOFFICE™ Solution

SVOFFICE™5/GE contains advanced coupling between SVHEAT™ and SVFLUX™ to model the saturated or unsaturated interactions between heat and water flow above or below freezing. SVAIR™ can be coupled in to calculate the interaction of the air phase. SVOFFICE™5/WR offers calculations of conduction or convection processes both below or above the boiling temperature. WR offers calculation of heat flow through the air, soil, or water phases for saturated or unsaturated soil systems. Boreholes can be modeled through engagement of specific objects in the front end.

 

  • The Challenge
    Heat exchange wells or borehole thermal extraction systems (BTES) may be used to store heat under the ground in aquifers.

    The Solution
    SVFLUX™ & SVHEAT™ may be coupled to provide 2D or 3D solutions for the modeling of heat flux wells or BTES. Conductive and convective heat flow can be modeled. Automatic mesh refinement can be utilized in order to improve solution accuracy.

  • The Challenge
    Wind turbine farms rely on large cables to transfer energy back to a power network. The cables are installed in unsaturated soils which must contain some moisture in order to provide cooling to the cables. Not enough pore-water presence can result in overheating of the cables.

    The Solution
    SVFLUX™ & SVHEAT™ can be utilized in order to modeling the interactions between unsaturated soils and the cable in order to ensure that proper cooling occurs.
