Our models are particularly well-suited to solving 3D systems involving unsaturated flow. In particular, our company has invested significant effort in research over the past number of years. Our company specializes in providing software tools and training services which can provide competitive advantages to firms and increase their level of expertise in the numerical modeling of subsurface processes. There are a few different ways that our firm can partner with your firm in mutually beneficial ways. Our company has a proven track record in working with major consulting firms to improve their level of practice in the field of numerical modeling. We are available to partner with your firm in the following ways:

  • Training:if your firm desires to increase knowledge in the area of numerical modeling we can provide training courses which can increase the level of competency for solving specific applications. Options for such training may be found here.
  • Model review services:if your firm is relatively confident in performing numerical modeling but it is the first time using our software then our firm can provide expert review of both conceptual models and final modeling results. This can result in increased quality of numerical modeling results.
  • Project collaboration:if you're consulting company does not have an experienced numerical modeler on staff then our firm can partner with you to develop proposals and win contracts which may have a significant numerical modeling component. Working with us can provide insight on the numerical modeling process and can educate your firm for successful winning of future contracts while utilizing our software.

Mining or Government Companies

  • Custom Model Development:Our firm has provided custom solutions to mining clients for which existing commercial or academic solutions do not exist. This type of arrangement would typically involve modification of our existing codes to solve a more challenging problem.

High Performance Computing Centre

Our software company routinely invests in the latest high-end computing equipment. Research has also been performed on solution of large models using parallel processors. Currently all our finite element software packages may utilize up to four concurrent processors to expedite the solution of large problems. A significant amount of research has gone into determining how to expedite the solution of large finite element and limit equilibrium slope stability models. Research continues on the expedited solution of large 3-D numerical models utilizing parallel processing and liquid cooled high-performance overclocked machines.

Our high-performance computing center can offer advanced services for solving particularly challenging problems. Problems which can typically result in large computation times can be managed to solve in reasonable times.

  • Model Optimization:in this service our company provides a review of the model you have created. An analysis then determines if the model can be optimized to run faster or more efficiently.
  • Model Review:In this scenario our company is hired to review and numerical model created in another software package. The model can be reviewed in terms of its conceptual principles or the correctness of the reported output.

Murray Fredlund, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Field of Expertise: Unsaturated Soils/Slope Stability

President, CEO SoilVision Systems Ltd.
Murray founded SoilVision Systems Ltd. in 1997 and has spent much of his time since guiding the development of geotechnical software development. He has been involved in a number of numerical modeling projects involving heap leach flow, heap leach stability, waste rock water balance and stability, tailings water balance, and tailings consolidation. More recent software projects supervised have been the release of SVOFFICE™5 and the new SVSLOPE® 2D/3D limit equilibrium slope stability software package. His work continues in the areas of i) unsaturated heap leach flow, ii) uranium and oil-sand large-strain tailings consolidation, and iii) applications of 3D slope stability. He continues to be active in the presentation of short courses around the world as well as training on the use of geotechnical software. The software products of SoilVision Systems Ltd. apply cutting edge research to the geotechnical community and have pioneered the application of 3D analysis to main-stream.


Ken Mercer, BSc, MSc, PhD, MBA

Field of Expertise: Mining Geotechnical

Adjunct Associate Professor of Mining Geomechanics, University of Western Australia Ken has more than 29 years of experience in the civil engineering and mining industries as a geotechnical engineer, researcher and consultant. Ken’s general areas of expertise include both soil mechanics and rock engineering in all aspects of mining waste landforms and surface (open pit) mining operations. This experience has been gained over a wide range of commodities but particularly platinum, heavy mineral sands and iron ore in the Pilbara.

Ken holds an MSc from University of Cape Town, a PhD in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, in the field of the deformation behaviour of unsupported rock slopes, and an MBA from Curtin University, Australia.

Ken has worked as a consultant for most of his career to a range of clients mainly in Africa and Australia but also internationally as far afield as Europe and Asia. He has also gained four years of operational experience for Anglo American and BHP Billiton. Before joining the ACG for three years of research and teaching, Ken was a divisional manager and an executive consultant for the Snowden Geotechnical Group. He is currently the founding director of independent geotechnical consultants, 3rd Rock Consulting.

Ken has a keen interest in training and mentoring and has provided a wide range of environmental geomechanics and rock mechanics related training courses throughout Australia, Africa and Asia for both mining companies, consultants, regulators and NGO/non profit organisations.
